A very white, very fluffy house cat who told everyone, at volume, exactly when something was unacceptable.
Thurston came to Matt and Shelli as one of two Ragamuffin kittens. There was only room for one of them at the time, and the one who came home was, in Matt's words, a scruffy little gremlin staring back at them.
He grew into a large, soft, extremely opinionated animal who could not be talked out of anything. Once he had decided something was wrong, there was no quiet version of him left.

Matt started filming him whenever he flew into one of these moods, mostly because nobody believed the description. What travelled was not the picture but the noise: a long, cracked, deeply personal complaint that sounded far too human to ignore.
Strangers cut it into songs, games and film trailers. Matt, who likes retro gaming and chiptunes, has said his favourite of all the fan edits is the one that puts Thurston into DuckTales.
The video that made him properly famous in 2019 is domestic and very small. Thurston wanted to go outside. Matt was not taking him outside. Thurston explained, at length, from a stool, that this was unacceptable.
It passed 430,000 likes. In October of that year someone dropped him into the Woman Yelling At Cat picture in place of Smudge, and that edit alone took 727,000 views in a little over a week.
Once the sound was loose it stopped belonging to one house in North Dakota. People put him in front of galaxies, into game footage, into songs with a beat behind him. He never found out about any of it.
